SPEEDMAP

The BOCHK Jockey Club Sprint brings together the best sprinters in Hong Kong, both established and up-and-coming. WELLINGTON is the horse to beat and was impressive winning the Premier Bowl fresh-up with 61kgs. He was given an excellent ride by Badel and got the ideal run but on the plus size he’ll be improved further and concedes less weight all around to horses that he beat last start. Badel might well get a good run in behind here as well. LUCKY SWEYNESSE worked hard then and can turn the tables. He has another tough draw, but Purton might elect to take a sit behind the leaders if the pace allows, or conversely punch to the lead again. He’s still got upside and I respect his chances. CORDYCEPS SIX was negatively ridden last time and with slightly more intent early can feature. He needs to lift but has that ability and should be close to peak fitness. SKY FIELD will be ridden quietly, but is well up to this level. If the race shape suits he can sprint into the finish. At longer odds WINNING DREAMER might surprise a few with a positive ride from a good barrier. The plays are small here on Lucky Sweynesse and Cordyceps Six, with Wellington just a tad short this time. The market has overreacted a tad much for mine after last start.

J: A Badel T: R Gibson
He’s a three-time Group 1 winner and the best sprinter in Hong Kong off level weights. Wellington gives away 5-pounds (2.5kg) to some promising horses, but with even luck he’s the deserved favourite.

J: B Shinn T: C Fownes
Last year’s Hong Kong Sprint winner hit the line well last start in the Premier Bowl with the fastest last-200m of the race (11.28). He’s drawn wide, will get back and need some luck against a few others, but is still a leading chance behind the favourite.

J: C Y Ho T: D J Whyte
He’s good when right as evidenced when winning the Centenary Sprint Cup at G1 level. Trainer Douglas Whyte has said he’s as well as he’s been in a year.

J: C L Chau T: P C Ng
This time last year he had genuine claims to being Hong Kong’s best sprinter. He hasn’t been quite the same after being brought down in the Hong Kong Sprint. He’s had an unusual preparation, but from the draw he’ll get his chance and at his best he could upset them.

J: J McDonald T: D A Hayes
Well-ridden to win last time down the straight. Drawn to sit midfield behind the speed and can win if he gets some luck. He hasn’t had much during his career!

J: M Chadwick T: K H Ting
Drawn wide, will have to work and showed last time he hadn’t returned from Korea in good enough form to win a race like this.

J: H Bowman T: J Size
He was awful when fresh-up last time. Maybe he’s not as effective with horses around him, so maybe he’ll be ridden more aggressively here?

J: V Borges T: J Size
He hasn’t had many favours with barrier draws recently. Probably not going as well this season as his last. Still open to some improvement, but a win would be a surprise.

J: K C Leung T: F C Lor
Last start he ran well from a handy barrier draw and off a good trip. Not likely to get the same run here from barrier 12 and a placing would be his best result.

J: S De Sousa T: R Gibson
Was taken back to next to last in the Premier Bowl and given no chance. He hit the line okay and one senses he will be close to being at his peak for this race today.

J: Z Purton T: K L Man
He worked hard and stayed on well to the line to run 2nd behind Wellington last time. Has good upside, but a tricky map today. With any sort of economical run he might be able to turn the tables even though he’s worse off at the weights today.

J: H Bentley T: P C Ng
He delivered an eye-catching run for 3rd last time but that was off an economical run and carrying a light weight. He won’t get those same favours here, however he’s very genuine.

J: L Hewitson T: C Fownes
Comes into the race fresh and is a pace influence. Would have to lift many lengths to feature.

J: L Ferraris T: F C Lor
He’s the best outside chance off a good barrier draw. Some of his peak runs are good enough for him to feature. Needs a positive ride.
