Sweet In Defeat: Happy Valley (M06)

Happy Valley had a turf track presented in GOOD TO FIRM condition with the running rail set in the “A” or “true” position.

The pattern seemed very “up and in”, it was a distinct advantage to be on the speed on the rail.

RACE 1: C2 - 1800m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was easily the best rated race on the card. The pace was solid and they came home in quick time. Helene Charisima produced the 4th-best final-200m (11.28) to win. Mr So And So was plain disappointing but overall the form should stack up well enough out of this event. In addition, whilst it wasn’t obvious at this point, the rail was clearly the spot to be on the night.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The middle sectional should have ensured those on-pace and working should have been overhauled but the pattern helped their cause. After Me was a good run in the race, after being caught three-wide with no cover he battled pretty well, but he might need a touch further. However, this race didn’t rate well at all and I’m not sure about the strength of the form. Compassion Star won well enough after working from a wide draw.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This race rated about where it should for the grade. I’m not sure what happened to Takingufurther, neither were the stewards, as he was ordered back to the trials. Very disappointing and there were no vet issues. Once again, the principals took the inside path and nothing out in the wider lanes made ground. Happy Time (SID) was one of those who took the shortcuts and he clocked the 2nd-fastest final-400m (22.67) at the meeting. I’m happy to follow him.

RACE 4: C4 - 1800M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A really muddling-run contest. They went fast early, before a real slackening of the pace and then they went quickly again. Overall the race rated about where it should for the class and one of the better runs was probably Sangria, who made the early move, and it was a good move. Such A Happiness might be better back at Sha Tin.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was equally the worst race on the card. It is also worth noting Smart Of Youth pulled up lame. Gift Of Lifeline had no gate speed at all but defied the pattern on the night and was a very good run in defeat. I don’t want to make him a SID because I am not sure he can take a close enough position based on this run and other past performances. The winner, King’s Trooper enjoyed a good run and appears to be quite progressive.

RACE 6: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This race didn’t rate anything special and with nine of the 12 runners within three-lengths that isn’t a complete surprise. Aquila had excuses after working too hard. Breeder’s Star was very good closing late but he is well exposed. I have doubts about the strength of the form out of this race.

RACE 7: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This race rated about where it should have. The pattern favoured the winner, Telecom Puma, but My Ally was sound in defeat and will no doubt strip fitter for the outing. He makes the SID file, along with High Rev, who posted the best final-200m (11.24) at the meeting. He has more wins in store especially when he steps up to a mile.

RACE 8: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was one of the better races on the card in terms of how it rated. Jenerator was very good in defeat, he was forced to make his run on the wrong part of the track and kept on very well. He should be winning a race soon. Racing Luck was also good and I expect the form to stack up well enough out of it.

RACE 9: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was one of the better races of the card and Le Terroir was very good, but he was also drawn on the rail and got the right run. In meetings to come, we will see how much of an advantage that was. Joyful Union (SID) got a bit too far back from the wide alley but ran on well (11.40 final-200m 8th-best at meeting) and I’m happy to follow him from a better gate at this track going forward.
