Happy Valley had a turf track presented in GOOD TO FIRM condition with the running rail set in the “C+3” or outermost position.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

They ran almost a second inside standard but this track was running some ridicuously fast times, so relatively, this wasn’t as impressive as it might have initially seemed. The winner, Happy Hour, was perfectly ridden and too good for this opposition. He’s going to find it harder up in grade, while Keep Winning ran on okay but has hardly been reliable in the past.

RACE 2: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A pretty slow tempo through the mid-stages and this became sprint home, meaning the leader and winner, Flying Genius, had a few favours. That said, he possesses gate speed and upside, so it’s hard to knock him. Winning Ways may have won but for being checked at the 600m which cost him ground at a key stage. Wild West Wing was knocked down at the start, settled last and ran on very well and he makes the SID file. He posted the best final-400m (22.10) at the meeting and looks a nice prospect.

RACE 3: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A daring ride in front and Lightning Steed found the lead and kicked for home to win narrowly. The race rated only okay, and not sure about how much depth there will be to this event going forward.

RACE 4: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Not sure what to make of this race as the pace was slow and it was a sprint home, which should have suited the likes of Ballistic King and Prance Dragon yet they were very weak and ran well below their normal marks. Interestingly, the first three were all in the three-wide running line with California Turbo winning. This race seemed to defy logic on a number of fronts so I will re-visit it at a later date to get some more clarification. Overall, suffice to say it didn’t rate well.

RACE 5: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The pace was solid and Highly Proactive did a power of early work but still managed to win. Quite remarkable really, and it doesn’t say much about the chasers. Silver Fig couldn’t have had a better run in terms of pace and was very disappotining, although the rail in the home straight may not have been the right spot to be up to this point (pre the track being rolled).

RACE 6: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The pace was good and the winner got the right run. Happy Alumni cost himself again by not jumping on terms and that needs to be rectified going forward. Split Of A Second was very good in defeat, posting the 11th-best final-200m (11.08) and charging home from well back in the field. He might be ready to win now.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The final-400m was run almost a second inside standard, which seems quite remarkable. The first 1250m was relatively steady but the race rated well and Bear Again was dominant, but it was an on-pace dominated race. So Acclaimed Light will make the SID file, posting the equal 17th-best final-200m (11.16) from well back in the field to finish third. Importantly, he gets a drop in grade after this run and he should be winning in Class 4. Party Together was also good, and he isn’t far from a win.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Another race the was run over a second inside of standard, and Amazing Star is clearly a very talented galloper. He still has 3-4 lengths to find to match it with the best sprinters in Hong Kong, but I like the fact he has a good cruising speed and can still quicken off it. It is a good receipe for winning races. The race rated well and I will be trusting the form out of it.

RACE 9: C2 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The pace was fast and this event rated well. It was a perfect set up for Big Party who tracked the solid tempo and quickened from a handy position. Big Party is another exciting prospect on the way up and the faster they go, the better the opposition, the more he will be suited. He won third-up last prep and can be followed again. Tornado Twist was very good but his lack of early pace always makes it difficult to follow him and he might be better suited to Sha Tin. Obviously, the race rated well and I’m happy to trust the form.
