Sweet In Defeat: Sha Tin (M29)

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “A+3” position.

There appeared to be a decent head-wind (running in the straight) that affected the first 6 or 7 races.

RACE 1: C5 - 1600m
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

A reasonable tempo for the first half of the race and then they came home very slowly. This was the worst race on the card and I have serious concerns around the form out of the race. Money Winner closed the race off well-enough but I fear he won’t find a much weaker race than this one and I doubt the form will stack up behind the winner Liverbird Star.

RACE 2: C4 - 1200m
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

Once again, the final sectional was slow, so a headwind in the straight at this stage may have been a factor. This was a sound win to Inner Flame who effectively settled on-pace, three-wide without cover and proved too strong. The race rated okay, but Inner Flame should be able to go on with it, given he is lightly-raced. Ka Ying Excellent makes the SID file, as he was restrained at the start and sustained a solid final-800m. He looks ready to win.

RACE 3: C5 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace was slow but they came home relatively fast, upgrading the win of Fire And Gold. The race didn’t rate well with the slow early speed but the market was accurate and Fire And Gold could possibly win again considering he was a maiden and he remains in the grade. Not sure about the rest.

RACE 4: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

Once again the overall time was slow, but the pace here was even with a very pedestrian final-400m. Overall the race rated just okay, but there was some merit in a couple of runners’ efforts. Leap Of Faith jumped awkwardly and still looks very green. He is looking for further but is clearly progressive and with more experience should be visiting the winners’ enclosure soon. My Winner blundered at the start and was very good all things considered.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace was quite solid in this event and once again, they ran a very slow final-400m. Two of the first three past the post came from well back in the field, and given the early splits, I think this upgrades the effort of Fantasy who ran well in defeat. That said, the winner Xponential was very good, posting a final-600m of 33.88 (10th-best at meeting) and he clearly has a future. What does dampen the enthusiasm of that effort is The Show, who is well-exposed, posted similar figures.

RACE 6: C4 - 1800M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace really quickened from the 800m, with that 800-400m split one second inside of standard! Whilst the pace to that point was slow, it made the effort of Blastoise quite good. Overall, the race rated pretty well and I expected the form to stack up okay.

RACE 7: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

At this stage of the day, perhaps the wind died off a touch as the horses in the last few races definitely worked home better. This race rated well with Computer Patch and Beauty Applause settling down for a battle a long way from home and nearly opening things up for a late closer, although nothing was good enough. Cool Team produced the 2nd-best final-200m (11.50) at the entire meeting and he makes the SID file.

RACE 8: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated well and the form will stack up well. The pace for the first-600m was too strong and it set up perfectly for Duke Wai, with cover, stalking that tempo. Lucky More had excuses, while Take What You Need (SID) makes the file. He closed strongly, albeit in a race that was set up nicely for him, but over 1200m and with the benefit of this run, he will go well.

RACE 9: C2 - 2000M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

This rated as clearly the best race of the day, and the early pace was strong! The winner Glorious Dragon was excellent again, and this win rated well-enough to suggest he has further to go in the handicap, and it was a terrific ride from Badel. Chefano ran another second, he always seems to hit a flat spot around the bend, and I won’t back him until blinkers are applied, and then he might be one to launch on. In any case, the form can be trusted out of this event.

RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

They were going to find it hard to catch the leader given the early sectionals and this was a classy front-running ride from van Niekerk on Simple Elegant, who is starting to do things much better. If Great Treasure gets that class drop, he will be winning, and once again, this back marker had it all to do but was very brave.
