Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition for the New Year meeting, with the running rail set in the “C” position.

RACE 1: C4 - 1200m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This was clearly the worst race of the day. The pace was a touch quicker than standard early but they crawled home in the final-400m. Speedy Dragon passed some tired horses but ran on okay, while Mission Smart ran on quite well and might be one to watch again. However, I have doubts about the strength of form out of this race behind Iron Boy the winner.

RACE 2: C5 - 1800m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The pace was slow, the race was dominated by those on-speed, and won by $147 chance McMunigal who improved on my ratings by more than 12-lengths to win this! His final-200m was the best in the race. Go figure….oh wait, the blinkers were re-applied. We were on Wicker who missed the start and settled back, and that was all she wrote.

RACE 3: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

I thought this race would rate higher than it did, which is disappointing given the winner Super Wealthy looks pretty smart. There was a lot of merit to the win, sitting three and four wide without cover on his third career start. He has a bright future. Fresh Power closed well in a messy race, while I’m not sure there was much depth to the rest of the field.

RACE 4: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This looked a weak race on paper and it turned out that way – it rated the second-worst on the card. That said, Party Everyday (SID) did catch the eye, posting the 11th-best final-200m (11.56) at the meeting. This was clearly a career-best run from him. He might be looking for further and he will need to hopefully settle a touch closer. Leap Of Faith will be okay in time, he probably just needs to strengthen-up a touch, but he will be winning soon.

RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

There was pressure during the second section of this race and the tempo was solid enough overall, setting things up nicely for those that sat midfield or worse during the running. Circuit Three (SID) was very good, clocking a slick final-200m (11.38 4th-best at meeting). He will strip fitter and be one to follow, while the winner Joyful Heart had to make a run from the 600m and there was more merit in his win than it appeared at first glance.

RACE 6: C2 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid and this race rated very well, Voyage Warrior was back to near his best figures. He is a talented sprinter and has more upside. Heart Conquered was very good, albeit with a light weight so I would like to see him again. Water Diviner was exeptionally good, although never in contention, he ran on superbly.

RACE 7: Group 3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This rated as the best race of the day and Golden Sixty was far too good for some seasoned opposition. He posted some sensational late splits, as he has through his career and it’s going to take a good one to beat him against his own age group in the Classic Mile. This was a much better run from Champion’s Way, and that seems to be about as good as he is.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This race rated pretty well and it was a nicely executed ride on the winner Lucky More. Good Beauty (SID) closed with an excellent final-200m (11.36 3rd-best at meeting) and he should now be at peak fitness. He might appreciate stepping up to 1400m. Overall, I think the form can be trusted out of this race.

RACE 9: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid and being on-pace with 108lbs no doubt helped Looking Good in the end. He must be an honest galloper to win with Alfie Chan on board, he isn’t having the impact a 4.5kg claimer should. Seattle Choice actually hit the line quite well, backing-up a sound Hong Kong debut. He might be looking for further. Farshad had his chance, and was disappointing, while Reel Bizzy might be better outside horses.

RACE 10: C3 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This race rated about where it should for the grade but it was a massive win to Charity Go. According to the Stewards report, he had “thrived” since being sent to Conghua and the gear change might have helped too. Big win all the same. Smart Patch had every possible chance, and that might be about as good as he is. Enzemble had shown nothing until this point, so I would like to see him again, but this was clearly lengths better than anything he had shown in the past.
