Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “C+3” or outermost position.

The races on the AWT (dirt) track were run on a surface rated GOOD.

RACE 1: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A very unique 1000m race in that the field were really bunched over three-lengths with a slowly run first half of the race. It didn’t rate that well but there were some nice runs in the event. President’s Choice (SID) was having his debut, started $27 and ran very well, closing with the best final-200m (11.32) in the race, while Bella Baby was held up and should have finished closer. Wild West Wing was a play for us and a bad one. He doesn’t appear to have the ‘racing smarts’ and although he was ridden in the opposite manner to what he was on debut, he was still disappointing.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

Note: Post race, Nice Fandango – “abnormal breathing” and Mr Magellan – Lame after race). Overall this was a pretty standard race for a Class 5 on the all-weather. That said, considering Nice Fandango had those issues, I thought he ran very well until he ran out of oxygen, so he could be interesting next time, while Excel Delight handled this surface well and will be winning in this grade in ths short term.

RACE 3: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid and this race rated pretty well, with the first two in the running being the first two past the post (they drew gates 10 and 11). All In Mind (SID) wasn’t on the best part of the track and was terrific in defeat, sustaining a solid final-600m. Comfort Life was subject to an enquiry, which isn’t a surprise given his 61 rating. He may have been looking for a class drop but caught the eye and when that does eventuate, he can be followed.

RACE 4: C5 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This was the worst race of the day, which isn’t a complete surprise. The pace was just even and they didn’t work home that strongly. Triumphant Lord was a real eye-catcher, he started $109 and from his previous 10 starts had shown zilch. This was a good run. However, I expect that over 1400-1600m in this grade he will be winning soon, if he’s able to hold this level of form, while much the same applies to Shinealot who might be looking for further, but Class 5 should give him a chance to win a race.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

This was a very good win from Will Power, carrying top weight and covering plenty of ground. His final-400m (22.86) was solid and he should be very competitive up in grade with a light weight. That said, Power King and Ready Conqueror (on debut) were both very good and in the right race could be worth following. And the quick early pace probably told with those near the speed, so the runs of Fortune Happiness and Dollar Reward were okay.

RACE 6: C4 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace really picked up here from the 1200m mark and that probably helped those a little closer to the pace. Cheerful Star won narrowly, but there is more in the locker with him but he is quirky. God Of Dragon is close to a win and London Hall closed well and he just needs a different race-shape.

RACE 7: C3 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

This race rated pretty well and the early pace was softer than expected, so all credit to the first two past the post. Mega Heart was terrific, he is racing very well. I think Elite Patch might be looking for a mile on this surface.

RACE 8: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This event delivered a really strange race shape; fast – very slow then fast again. At the finish, 1.75 lengths covered eight horses, so I am not sure how much can be learned from the race. Star Of Yuen Long over-raced, Mr Aldan was wide without cover, etc etc. All that said, Monica was unlucky and didn’t have many favours. He can win soon.

RACE 9: C2 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

Clearly the best race on the day, and Chefano finally won. That said, his form and ratings have been very similar and he was a worthy winner. He could have easily won three of six this preparaiton and he will go close next time too. Enjoying (SID) posted the 7th-best final-200m (11.38) at the meeting when making a run through a tight gap and this Australian-import, formerly known as Global Exchange, is flying under the radar at the moment for 2020 HK Derby.

RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A good tempo was set early before a real steadying from the 800-400m, which probably helped those back in the field a touch. Beauty Legacy (formerly Hawkshot) produced the 2nd-fastest final-200m (11.24) at the meeting and was terrific winning on debut, under a brilliant ride. He is a serious Derby prospect. Decrypt peaked on his run again, the jury is out with him. And Star Shine is close to a win, but needs to find the right race.
